Outdoor learning has its origins in ancient educational philosophies that viewed nature as a crucial learning environment. Early educators like Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi recognised the value of experiential learning in nature, emphasising hands-on activities over rote memorisation.
The 20th century saw the formalisation of outdoor education with organisations like the Boy Scouts and Girl Guides, which encouraged young people to engage with nature and develop survival skills. This era also marked the establishment of outdoor education centres, paving the way for structured learning experiences.
Today, outdoor learning encompasses various activities, from school field trips to adventure-based programs like those offered at Camp Wilderness. We combine education with recreation, providing campers with opportunities to learn about teamwork, problem-solving, and environmental stewardship.
..reflects a growing recognition of its value in education. At Camp Wilderness, we continue to innovate and adapt our programs to meet the needs of today’s campers, ensuring that outdoor experiences remain a vital part of holistic education.
