What better way to get the kids outdoors even in the chillier months than building a campfire together and toasting some yummy snacks that everyone can enjoy!
We are going to run through a handful of our favourite campfire snacks and how easy they are to prepare.
Of course, we had to start with the classic! Toasted marshmallows are a staple for many campfires and with good reason. They are easy to carry, require no cleaning up and are enjoyed by most.
So what will you need:
-Marshmallows
-Skewers
Pop a marshmallow on a skewer and hold above the campfire regularly turning to ensure an even layer of toastiness across. Make sure they cool a little before diving straight in the middle can be quite hot.
A fruity snack with a twist! This one again requires minimal clean up so is great for an easy and yummy snack.
What you will need:
-Bananas
-Chocolate Chunks
-Skewers
Start by splitting a line down the front of your banana and squeeze as many of your chocolate chunks as you like (or can fit) then push your skewer through your banana making sure the opening with all the chocolate is facing upwards to ensure you don’t drop any.
It doesn’t have to be all sweet treats on a campfire! How about a delicious toasted sandwich.
This one obviously will take a little bit more preparation but you can make the sandwiches ahead of time to ensure everyone has their favourite fillings and that you don’t need to bring half the kitchen with you to make them to order
What you will need:
-Bread
-Fillings of your choice
-Tinfoil
Prep the sandwiches as you would normally, then wrap them in a bit of tinfoil placing them towards the top flames to create a perfectly toasted sandwich. We recommend keeping a close eye on this one to ensure the tinfoil does not catch alight and an adult-only to remove the sandwich from the foil as it’s likely to be very hot.
Fancy something a little more substantial?
Baked or Jacket potatoes are a fantastic choice. They are low maintenance and the end result is warm and filling. Perfect for a chillier night watching the stars in the garden.
What you will need:
– Potatoes
– Cream Cheese
– Choice of toppings
Prep the potatoes by pricking them with a fork and wrapping them in tinfoil. You can then pop them at the base of your campfire(Not in the flames but near the heat!) And then leave them for 1/2 hours until they become soft.
If you are short on time you can always pre-cook the potatoes in the oven and just add them to the campfire for the final step. Perfect if you have little ones that are not the most patient.
When your potatoes are ready, carefully open each of the parcels and slice open the potatoes so you can easily scoop out all of the fillings into a bowl. Do not throw away the crispy skins!
Once the fillings are all in a bowl and in your cream cheese and any additional ingredients (We personally like to add onion and some herbs but you can add anything)
Now it’s time to pop the filling back in the skins. You can tuck in right away or wrap them back up to keep warm for when you aready.
A full family meal! This campfire chilli is the perfect go to dinner dish when you have lots of people to feed.
What you will need:
-Beef Mince
-Beef stock, Chopped Tomatoes, Kidney Beans
-Onion and Garlic
-Cream Cheese or greek yogurt
-Seasoning (Salt, pepper, chilli, smoked paprika)
-Oil
-Bread
Similar to previous recipes this can be prepared in a kitchen if you are short on time and warmed up over the campfire. Here is how to make it all outside during your campfire.
Start with frying your onions and garlic until they are soft, we also like to add mushrooms for our kids but you can add anything you like.
Once they are ready add in your meat and start browning while combining all of your seasonings.
Now once everything has been combined you can start adding in your wet ingredients. Tinned tomatoes, beef stock and kidney beans.
The mixture should all be bubbling slowly and will need regularly mixing over the next 2 hours.
When the chilli is now and thick you can mix in cream cheese or the greek yoghurt on top as a sour cream.
Serve into bowls and serve with warm bread
And there you have it! Our top 5 campfire snacks that are easy to make and will be enjoyed by all.
