Half term has a habit of arriving fast. One minute the school routine is in full swing, the next you’re trying to plan activities, manage screen time, and answer the familiar phrase: “What are we doing today?” or, even worse “I’m bored!”

For many, keeping children entertained for an entire week can be hard – especially when the weather is unpredictable and attention spans seem shorter than ever. Add in that you don’t want your child glued to a screen whenever you look away and you’ve got a real challenge. That’s why more families are turning to outdoor adventure camps to break up the holidays and give children something genuinely exciting to look forward to.

Experiences like Camp Wilderness offer something very different from the usual half term activities. Instead of another day indoors, children get the chance to head outside, try new challenges, build confidence, and spend time properly immersed in nature.

At Camp Wilderness, days are packed with hands-on adventure. Children can learn bushcraft and survival skills, cook over campfires, explore woodland environments, take part in outdoor challenges, and make new friendships along the way. It’s the kind of experience that keeps them active, engaged, and excited from morning through to evening.

The benefits go far beyond simply keeping children occupied. Outdoor camps encourage independence, teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving in a way that feels natural and fun. Whether it’s learning how to light a fire safely, working together to complete challenges, or stepping outside of their comfort zone for the first time, children often come away with a real sense of achievement.

For parents, there’s also reassurance in knowing that safety and wellbeing are a key part of the experience. Our camps are run by experienced outdoor instructors in structured, supportive environments, with activities carefully supervised and designed to suit different ages and confidence levels. The aim is to give children freedom to explore and learn, while ensuring they feel safe, supported, and included throughout their stay.

Perhaps one of the biggest benefits is the chance for children to disconnect from screens and reconnect with the outdoors. In a world where so much free time is spent online, spending a few days climbing trees, sitting around campfires, exploring woodland trails, and learning practical skills can be incredibly valuable.

With half term fast approaching and places filling quickly, outdoor camps are becoming one of the most popular ways for families to turn the school holidays into something memorable. And with summer camps already open for bookings too, the adventure doesn’t have to stop when half term ends.

Our camps at Penshurst Place and Cuffley are looking forward to welcoming your kids this half term. Find out more here.
