As autumn settles in it feels a long while until our summer bushcraft camps will be opening their doors again to adventurers, but there are ways to keep the bushcraft magic alive in the meantime! One fantastic option is to introduce them to the world of bushcraft right in your own garden. Bushcraft activities teach children valuable lessons about nature, survival skills, and creativity. Moreover, they promote independence, problem-solving, and a love for the great outdoors. So, if you’re looking for some exciting activities to try with your kids, here are five bushcraft activities to explore in your garden!
Shelter Building
Encourage your kids to unleash their inner architect by building their very own shelter. Whether using branches, sticks, and leaves or repurposing items from your shed, shelter building will keep them busy for hours. Start by discussing the different types of shelters found in nature and their purposes. Then, let their imaginations run wild as they design and construct their structures. This activity promotes teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving skills while connecting children to the wonders of nature.
Fire Starting
Fire has always been an essential part of human survival and learning how to start a fire safely is a valuable skill for any adventurer. Teach your kids the basics of fire building using natural materials such as dry leaves, twigs, and birch bark. Under close supervision, allow them to practice their fire-starting skills using a handheld flint and steel. This activity will not only provide a valuable lesson in self-reliance but also generate a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.
Nature Scavenger Hunt
Organize a scavenger hunt to get your kids excited about exploring the natural world in their garden. Create a list of items for them to find, such as different types of leaves, sticks of varying sizes, rocks, or animal footprints. Encourage them to use their observation skills as they search for these items. This activity will enhance their knowledge of the local flora and fauna while nurturing their curiosity about the environment.
Plant Identification
Introduce your children to the fascinating world of plants by teaching them how to identify different species in your garden. Arm them with a field guide or use an online resource to help them identify flowers, trees, and other plants. Teach them about the importance of plants in our ecosystem and how they provide food, shelter, and oxygen. This activity will help foster a deep appreciation for nature and instil a desire to protect it.
Nature Crafts
Encourage your kids to express their artistic side while using natural materials from your garden. Provide them with items such as leaves, flowers, pinecones, and pebbles, and let their imagination guide them in creating unique artwork. They could make leaf rubbings, flower wreaths, or even paint rocks to resemble animals or insects. This activity encourages creativity, resourcefulness, and an appreciation for the beauty found in nature.
Engaging in bushcraft activities in your garden allows your kids to develop essential skills while enjoying the great outdoors. We hope these activities keep you busy in the run up to our summer camps and look forward to seeing some of your little explorers there!
