Here at Camp Wilderness, we’re all about getting back-to-basics and back-to-nature. We offer kids and families a chance to unplug and take their learning outside of the classroom with wilderness residentials.

Technology has become a huge part of our lives, it supports us in nearly everything we do. With how useful it is, it’s hard to imagine that this all comes at a cost. With its ever-increasing presence in society, we’re spending more and more time in front of a screen. In fact, it’s been found that children are spending 6+ hours per day in front of a screen. In summer that’s equivalent to the time they’d spend in the classroom.

While these devices help improve our lives, we can’t ignore how much they’re impacting our daily habits. So, we want to share some of the benefits of taking a step back from the screen this summer.

Feel energized

Screens have a massive impact on our sleep schedules. Screen brightness and color choices on social media can cause our brains to stay awake longer. Safe exposure to natural sunlight will help balance your energy and allow you a good night’s rest.

Taking breaks throughout the day and getting away from your screen can also help with productivity. Stepping outside can reduce the strain on your eyes, and be a literal fresh air that helps you catalogue everything, helping to reduce stress.

Health and Mindset

Getting away from your screen is incredibly important for your health. Getting away from your desk and device to be outside helps your body to take in more Vitamin D which will elevate your mood and promotes good health and mindset.

Centre Your Mind

It’s so easy to get absorbed in your screen, even if we don’t like what we’re seeing. A new word has even been created to describe this phenomenon; ‘Doom scrolling’. This can have severe impacts on your mental health. Leaving your devices behind and getting outside, surrounding yourself in the calming sights and sounds of nature can help you centre yourself back in the moment. It breaks that vicious cycle that can negatively effect your mental health.
