At Camp Wilderness we’re passionate about helping children break free from their everyday lives and have a good old fashioned back-to-basics adventure… that’s why all our kids camps are 100% tech free.
Whilst there are endless benefits to disconnecting from technology, we wanted to share with you our 5 top reasons for making Camp Wilderness a tech-free zone:
1. ENCOURAGES FACE TO FACE CONVERSATION
As children become more and more used to conversing online, be in over instant message or video chat, it’s no surprise that they often prioritise online conversations over those going on in the same room. By eliminating the tech on camp children are able to focus on the people around them, encouraging them to build connections with children they haven’t met before and make new camps friends.
2. CALMS THE MIND
The pull of being constantly connected is as demanding for children as it is for adults. So, some time away from messages, updates and alerts gives children’s brains time to reset and be in the moment, helping them focus on the now.
3. ENCOURAGES CHILDREN TO THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX
It’s not until we’re without our devices that we realise how reliant we have become on technology… if we don’t know the answer or can’t work something out, we turn to Google without a first thought. Away from the internet, when faced with a new challenge on camp, children turn to one another for advice and ideas, it helps them to get those cogs turning and come up with a new solution.
4. BENEFITS CHILDREN’S EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE
Reading the emotions of others is really difficult online, we don’t pick up on the same emotional signals through peoples body language, tone and energy. So, spending time together in person is the perfect way for children to practice their emotional intelligence as they work through tasks and social scenarios with their tribe buddies.
5. GIVES CHILDREN A CHALLENGE
As adults, I’m sure we’d all admit to being addicted to our technology! So, it’s fair to say that living without it is as much of a challenge for our children as it would be for us. Camp Wilderness is all about taking on new challenges, in a new environment, with a new group of people… so it’s the perfect place to embrace the tech-free challenge too!
So, after a year of home learning and socialising online why not unplug your child in 2021 and book them a place on our 3-day, 5-day or Advanced Ed Stafford camps!
The Importance of Outdoor Play
As #wildsummer2018 approaches, we are talking about why encouraging your children to ‘unplug’, (that is, to step away from the brightly coloured world of apps, games and TV programmes) and play outdoors is so important for your children.
